Nursing Home Outreach

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.  All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.  He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.  For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in,  I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?  When did we see you a stranger and invite you in or needing clothes and clothe you?  When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’" ~ Matthew 25: 31-40

The purpose of PWOC outreach is simply just that ~ to reach out.  Our goal is not only to reach out to the base community but also to the surrounding Japanese community.  One practical way we accomplish this goal is through our nursing home outreach.  The PWOC visits the local Harugaoka Old Aged Home once every other month.  We share this responsibility with our CWOC (catholic women of the chapel) sisters who visit on the months we do not.

The purpose of our visit is to demonstrate the love of Christ to others.  We achieve this through celebrating resident birthdays and meeting basic needs through the giving of a gift.

Items included in these gift bags are:
  • Ivory bar Soap
  • Shampoo
  • Lotion (sensitive skin)
  • Razors
  • Shaving cream (men only)
  • Toothbrushes (soft)
  • Toothpaste
  • Cotton Swabs (travel size)
  • Kleenex (travel size)
  • Socks for men and women
  • Small Teddy Bears or stuffed animal
  • Hand towels (3 packs @ BX for $5)
  • Volunteer to make cookies or brownies for the “birthday cake”

We typically meet on the last Friday of the month (date normally posted to blog page and PWOC Misawa FB page) at 3:30 in the BX parking lot (nearest the main gate).  We leave no later than 3:45, and either carpool or follow someone to the nursing home.

So maybe you would like to visit or help out but can’t due to work or other responsibilities.  Don’t worry!  Donating items to the PWOC from the above list or making brownies/cookies for the visit are great ways to get involved and leave an eternal mark in the lives of others.  If you are interested in donating items or helping out in any way; you can contact me, Melissa, at misawapwocoutreach@gmail.com!

If you are interested in joining us, check the calendar for our next visit time. The residents LOVE children. This is a great opportunity to try our Japanese language skills out with a very friendly audience.

We'd love to have you join us on our next visit.
