In the past few weeks several in our group were blessed to be a blessing to a missionary family in our area. We delivered groceries, supplies and toured their new church and mission house.

Here is a note from Debbie, "I would like to again thank everyone for blessing our family with so many groceries and supplies....the pink snow books fit Esther perfectly. She quickly traded them for the "boyish ones" she's been wearing this winter. Everything you brought seemed to be just what we needed at the moment, and I was once again reminded God will take care of us if we only continue to trust in Him."

Please be aware as PCS season approaches we will accept items which you cannot pack that are still useful (open cleaning supplies, food). De'Etta will be the POC for this project and make sure your leftovers bless various missionary families in the area.

Winter Outing

Prayer Walk

If you are interested in joining other women in prayer, consider joining us for our monthly Prayer Walk! We'll meet at the Sollars track at 9am on the 2nd Saturday of each month. The goal is to experience the natural "high" that comes from exercising and spending time in conversation with God. You can walk or run, pray alone or with a partner, pray silently together or out loud. If you have children in strollers, bring them! If you have older children that can play on the playground while we walk, bring them! (We simply ask that the children not run around the ladies on the track). If you want a way to fit in more exercise AND time with God, this is a wonderful way to do both. For more information, contact Ruth.

Beta Testers Sought

Would you be willing to help BETA TEST this upcoming year's curriculum for PWOCI WILD weekends? If you can spend a Saturday with us the end of December, please let De'Etta know at misawa@pwoc.org.

You will participate in three workshops, provide feedback on the training, enjoy lunch and snacks. I need at least five or six ladies to make this work well. You do NOT need to be a current exec board member and you do NOT have to be interested in being a local board member to help out.

We'll be beta testing two workshops on being a local PWOC Financial Liaison and one designed for Admin Coordinators and Financial Liaisons.

If you’d like to join us for a bit of an impromptuwork party tomorrow (3 Nov) at 10:00 – 11:30 for lingering Asia Region conferenceprojects – we’d love to have you. FeelNO GUILT if you work or have other plans and can’t help. The desire to help was expressed so I’mmaking the opportunity known.

We’ll set up our work tables in thenursery/classroom so you can watch your children and work if that is a dynamicthat will work for you. We willbasically cut, laminate, punch, assemble any of those sorts of things that Iusually do with my kids the day before a retreat – conference is a bit biggerof a job. ::snort::

October's selection is "The Prayers of Agnes Sparrow." This book is available as a Kindle download.

From Publisher's Weekly - Quirk abounds in this tale of two sisters, Agnes and Griselda Sparrow. The titular Agnes forswears leaving home when she tips the scale at 600 pounds, and stays put and prays. When what seem to be miracles—healings from serious illnesses—occur, the residents of the small Pennsylvania town of Bright's Pond naturally attribute them to Agnes. Agnes's putative power attracts a stranger in need of an unstated miracle, and the plot thickens from there. To pull off such a quirky novel, the characters need to be vividly etched, the writing consistently clever and the plotting persuasive on its own terms. Magnin partly succeeds: she meets the clever quotient, but on the whole the book is uneven. Some of the explanations that account for characters' decisions aren't persuasive; some dark plot twists threaten to overwhelm the quirkiness; and the pacing of the first half of the book is slow. Still, Magnin will please those who like their faith fiction with a twist, even if not everything served at the town's Full Moon Cafe can be swallowed. (Sept.)

Intimate Delight

"Sound Bible exposition is an imperative must in the Church of the Living God. Without it no church can be a New Testament church in any strict meaning of the term. But exposition may be carried on in such way as to leave the hearers devoid of any true spiritual nourishment whatever. For it is not mere words that nourish the soul, but God Himself, and unless and until the hearers find God in personal experience they are not the better for having heard the truth. The Bible is not an end in itself, but a means to bring men to an intimate and satisfying knowledge of God, that they may enter into Him, that they may delight in His Presence, may taste and know the inner sweetness of the very God Himself in the core and center of their hearts. "

We can fall into several errors towards the Word.

Devalue it's place in our life and base our "faith" totally on emotion, others words, and experience
Become focused on a didactic knowledge of the Word and fail to be spiritually nourished by it

The Word of God is meant to

Be a conversation with God
Introduce us to God
Nourish us
Assist in our transformation into His image
Provide a pattern for life
Wash and cleans us
Correct us
Reprove us
Teach us
Train us in righteousness
Equip us for every good work to which He calls
Give us great peace
Keep us from stumbling and being offended as we surrender to the Lord of the Word

We must avoid either neglecting the Word or treating the Word like an academic subject. We need to approach the Word expecting to hear from the God of the Word. We need to learn to practice conversational/relational reading of the Word. As we do our "Bible study" truly will become an intimate delight.

May your Bible study bring you great intimacy and delight, may you be nourished, fed, changed by the time you spend with God interacting with His message to you.

5% Principle

I think it timely I share a lesson I’ve been re- learning as we begin a new ministry year.

I tend to live life at 110%; I struggle with finding and MAINTAINING balance in life. After the Great East Japan Earthquake, I threw myself into relief efforts. This was no surprise to those who know me. I also continued with my PWOC responsibilities (local and regional). It happened subtly – I lost sight of the 5% principle, relationships began to suffer, and I needed REST.

Wayne Cordeiro, in Leading on Empty states, “If you and I are going to enjoy healing and rest at our very core, we must discover and discern the top 5 percent of life.” P 77. 85% of what we do, anyone can do. Many of these tasks can be delegated (I

NVOLVE women in the work). 10% of what we do someone with training should be able to do. 5% of what I do; only I can do! I won’t be held accountable for all the needs around me. I will be held accountable for this 5% – for what I’ve accomplished of what HE has asked me to accomplish.

What are my 5% activities? What would a life focused on 5% look like? Do I truly elevate this 5% above the other 95% of my activities? The higher I elevate the importance of this 5 percent the easier it is for me to make choices which honor these God-given priorities. I can’t find someone to take my place in these activities because they require my presence. How I live the 5% validates the other 95% of my life.

I made some painful choices. I had to recharge, reflect and restructure. I have challenged our local PWOC board to consider their personal 5% as well as our corporate 5%. This has created freedom and excitement as we follow the passions God has given each of us. Simplicity has become an oft repeated battle cry in Misawa (though new activities have begun).

I share my 5% to assist as you evaluate your 5%.

A whole-hearted, extravagant, lavish, passionate, intimate relationship with Jesus Christ
A vibrant relationship with Michael
An authentic family – close to God and one another

mentoring my children
educating my children
caring for my family
FIGHTING for this connection to remain strong, not fatalistically assuming we’ll grow apart as children leave home

A physically healthy body and creative soul
Taking time to enjoy family and friends
A God-pleasing ministry

Teaching/ mentoring women
inviting women to a deeper relationship with Jesus
someday this may well include more missions/relief efforts

Caramel Apple Salad

1(1.5 oz or 4 serving size) box of instant butterscotch pudding

1(8oz) carton whipped topping (cool whip)

1(8oz) can crushed pineapple w/juice

1cup mini marshmallows

3cups chopped apples with skin

2snickers bars, chopped

Mix together pudding, cool whip, pineapple until well blended. Stir in apples, marshmallows, snickers until thoroughly combined. Refrigerate and serve.

Christina's Broccoli Salad

2 bunches broccoli (cut into small pieces)

1/4 cup red or sweet onion (chopped fine)

1/2 lb. browned bacon (crumble or cut into bits)

1 c. dried cranberries (I use the craisins by ocean spray)

1 c. mayo (no non fat)

2 Tbls. balsamic vinegar

1/2 cup sugar or 1/3-1/2 cup honey (I use honey, mixes andtastes better)

Toss the first 4 ingredients together in a bowl. In separatebowl whisk together last 3 ingredients for the sauce. Pour sauce overbroccoli mixture, toss, serve or chill and serve!

Hearty Porridge (Crockpot Overnight)

1cup of steel cut oats

1cup of grits*

2cups diced apples

1cup dried cranberries

4cups water

2cups milk

1/4cup brown sugar

1Tbsp ground cinnamon

1tsp Pumpkin Pie Spice

2Tbsp butter

Combineall the ingredients, mix well. Let sit overnight in crockpot on low. Top withchopped Pecans, slivered almonds and/or shredded coconut. Real recipe calls for2 cups steel cut oats, do not substitute Rolled Oats it will come out Mushy. The grits give it a different texture making it more of a porridge thanan oatmeal. Enjoy!

Breakfast and Prayer

Tuesday PWOC had Breakfast and Prayer. Tara, our Spiritual life Chair, has done a great job of changing up these breakfasts each month. This month, after breakfast and corporate prayer, we participated in a prayer walk. We put various prompts and prayer focus' around the room. The women came in and went through the walk at their own pace. This was a wonderful way to incorporate individual prayer in our group setting.

Gyudon - Japanese Beef Bowl

This is a YUMMY dish my friend whose been married and living in Japan for decades shared with me. serves 4 people

3/4 lb thin Beef (300 grams)
1/2 Onion
2 or 3 Green Onions
1 C Broth (250 ml)
3 T Japanese Sake/wine
3 T Mirin (sweet wine)
1/4 C Sugar
1/4 C Soy Sauce
1 1/2 T ginger root (raw - 1 piece)

Cut stips of meet into 1 inch pieces
Thinly slice onion
Cut green oinion and wash well
Cut and peel ginger into thin matchsticks
Put broth in a hot fry pan with ginger
When it boils add (sake, mirin, sugar, soy sauce)
When it boils again, add beef.
Skim the foam off.
Add onion.
When it boils again, turn it down and simmer, covered 5 - 6 min (or until tender)
Add green onion and cook 1 -2 min (covered).
Sever over bowls of rice.

*We added corn starch (potato flour used here) and some Agave Nectar is it was a bit too salty. We tripled the beef and doubled the sauce. It was all gone. There were nine of us. Thanks for this recipe, Kim.

Nursing Home Visit

Join us THIS Friday in the BX parking lot - nearest the main gate - at 3:30. We'll leave at 3:45 to visit a local nursing home. We present birthday gifts to residents, sing happy birthday, enjoy a quick drink and a bit of intercultural socialization. We'll be leaving the nursing home by 4:30 p.m.

Refreshing Summer Orzo Salad (tweaked)

1package orzo pasta (cooked per package instructions)

1/4cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil

11/2 Tablespoon minced garlic

1/2tsp dried basil

1/2tsp dried Thyme

1/4- 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flake (per taste)

1/2cup pine nuts

1cup pitted kalamata olives

1(2oz) jar of capers, with liquid

6 ozcrumbled feta cheese

5-8oz of fresh spinach leaves (a little over half a bag, based on preference)

1Tablespoon Lemon juice

Whilecooking orzo, heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sautegarlic for 2 minutes. Stir in basil, thyme, red pepper flakes, and pinenuts. Cook and stir until the pine nuts have toasted to a light goldenbrown.

In alarge bowl, mix the orzo, chopped olives, capers, feta and spinach. Whilestill warm, pour the pine nuts mixture over the pasta and mix thoroughlycovering all the pasta to keep from sticking together. Add Lemon juiceand stir again. Serve either warm or cold. Will keep for a coupleof days in an airtight container.

Announcing MOCA

First there was PWOC and it was good. Then there was MOPS and PWOC and it was very good. Now there is MOCA, MOPS and PWOC and it is OUTSTANDING.

With joy we announce the forming of a group geared to prayer and support for
Moms Of College Aged - MOCA. We envision this being a monthly (or possibly bi-monthly) group. Please note your children do NOT need to be in college for you to join this group. In fact, if you have a Senior and feel a group like this would benefit you as you look ahead to the upcoming transitions, you are welcome to join us!

We know as much as we love Japan, it's hard to leave "children of any age in the states". MOCA worked better than MWLCOAAITS..... Look for more details and our first meeting to kick off in late August or early September.

Asia Region Conference

Don’t miss the opportunity to make history at the first Asia Region Conference Nov 10th – 13^th at the Dragon Hill Lodge in Seoul, Korea. Our theme is “Your Kingdom Come – Keys to Kingdom Living” – each workshop will provide you with kingdom keys to assist in living a victorious Kingdom Life. Deadline for registration is September 13th. The chapel is paying over 70% of the cost for each woman to attend. Your cost will be $400 non-refundable. This will cover travel, lodging, meals and conference fees.

Your fees will be collected Sunday - 21 and 28 Aug, at the PWOC Fall Rally - 9, 10 Sept and Tuesday 13 Sept at PWOC Bible Study.

Due to the schedules of travel to Seoul we may leave 9 Nov and return 14 Nov.

Planning a New Ministry Year

Friday night and Saturday morning our local PWOC board traveled to Lake Towada for a planning and training retreat. Our goal was for all to begin building relationships with each other and for us to share vision. We accomplished both goals - splendidly - and had some fun along the way.

The trip began with a diesel incident. "Green means go" is a great mantra when you own a diesel van; not so great when you own a gas van. Enough said. ::grin:: Exhibiting superb flexibility, we simply packed into Muriel's car and headed out.

The drive through Oriase Gorge is beautiful any time of year.

Five us drove up in Muriel's car and stopped along the way for a photo or two.

The first part of our weekend was spent on various tests: Engage Your Strengths, a discussion of personality and love languages. We breezed through the personality and love languages and spent quite a bit of time discussing strengths, how to play to them, how to lead with our strengths and relate to those with different strengths than ours. We committed to watch for barrier labels in ourselves and ones we may attach to children, friends and each other.

We also shared how we envision walking out our various positions.

Tara shares her position is one of pouring into ladies so they can pour out to others - leading to intimacy with Jesus and each other.

Jess keeps us all together in her role as publicity team leader.

We shared lots of laughs and discovered Mandy is quite talented in the genre of pipe-cleaner-art.

Photo is missing several folks - but with creatively fun women like these - Misawa is in for a great year of PWOC.

We spent time praying to identify needs we see in our Misawa Military Female population. We firmed up summer plans and decided on a few key elements of the year.

Noting so many parading around in yukatas - we joined them. Even PWOC color!

This was a good way for our new leadership team to get to know each other, share vision and begin moving as one to a new year of PWOC ministry. We were blessed to be afforded this opportunity and believe the fruit from this time together will bless the rest of Misawa PWOC in the upcoming year.

Nursing Home Correction

June's Book Club Meeting

Spring Fling 2011

Semper Gumby was our motto as we planned this year's local retreat.

It was a learning experience and ultimately a joy (!) to serve as Misawa's Retreat Coordinator this year. We had a Fall Rally the end of August and had planned a 3 day/2 night retreat in May....the date had to change due to Military exercises ....an earthquake and tsunami, a voluntary departure involving many of our members, a return of many of our ladies (Welcome BACK!)...and a change in venues.....

Renee was our anointed speaker. She spoke on Glory, Arise, and Light from Is 60:1-3. This beautifully tied up our year's theme - Shine in the Light of His Glory. We began exploring this theme at the Fall Rally focusing on Matt 5 and being salt and light. It has been amazing to watch how God prepared us for current events.

We went to Komaki for our Fri night meeting, dinner and onsen enjoyment-no onsen photos will be forthcoming.

Kobayashi-san is our liaison with Japanese Venues. He's invaluable and it was a learning experience to work with him this past year. I learned much about Japanese culture. He very much approved of my announcements about onsen behavior - giving me high praise, "De'Etta-san, you are just like Japanese."

What is God calling you to Arise from and Arise to?

Gifts were given to our amazing Retreat team. I asked two to remain and as all sat down, I realized Renee (speaker) and Susane (President) are both leaving shortly. What a joy it has been to serve with these two ladies the past two years.

Board gifts for Susane were two of Twyla Misawa's famous pillow cases, a photo albums, notes and letters from the PWOC group and a gift certificate for a facial.

Well - something was funny, I'm sure. Work hard but HAVE FUN!

Tara surprises me with a gift from y'all - card (such sweet encouragement from one of the best PWOC groups in the world) and itunes for my ipad (already purchased movie for my flight) and a bit of green for a pedicure (which is a new Misawa thing for me!).

The event ended with the recognition and thanks to the 2010-2011 PWOC board and the installation of the 2011-2012 Misawa PWOC board.

First Kits Delivered

Sixty-four of the Chapel's Transition Home Kits were delivered yesterday to Miyako Shi. This was made possible by the cooperation of both the Protestant and Catholic parish. I believe every Protestant program was represented in the volunteer pool this week. Thank you! We will continue to assemble kits. The week's shopping trips were completed and today was the FIRST chapel Kit Assembly day. We learned a lot...we accomplished a lot. Thanks to all 25 - 30 who showed up to help, Men, Women, Youth and Children.

We assembled 65 kits...If you missed this week's activity, keep checking the Prot News, here, Misawa AB Facebook page for upcoming opportunities.

You may continue to drop off items from the home kit list at the chaplain 1 office....funds can be dropped off at any chapel service this Sunday.

Shopping Trip

Have you heard about the Transition Home Kits the chapel is collecting for displaced Japanese families who will be moving from evacuation centers to FEMA type homes in the near future? A list is available at the chapel or by emailing misawakits@gmail.com. Realizing that we like to do things together, and hearing that some were intimidated by the list....we are offering a group shopping day. We will meet at the BX parking lot nearest the main gate on Tuesday at 0930. Any lady who would like to caravan with us is welcome to join us.

In addition, De'Etta is compiling a list of volunteers willing to shop for, assemble and deliver kits. If this is not your week to help, maybe future week will be.

When Prayer is Difficult

Do you ever find yourself at a loss for words in prayer? Following the successive disasters in Japan—earthquake, tsunami, ongoing nuclear crisis, and widespread devastation—I have found myself nearly speechless on my knees, my prayers summed up in three words, “Lord, have mercy.” At those times I am comforted by Romans 8:26, knowing that the Spirit himself intercedes with groans that words cannot express.

Yet, how do we pray in times like these? What do we ask for? Where do we begin, when there are so many to pray for? Rescue workers, refugees, power plant operators, aid organizations, missionaries, orphans, churches, the grieving, injured and missing, and that’s only the start of an unending list. The sheer need is overwhelming.

In one of our local PWOC studies, “Lord, Teach Me to Pray in 28 Days,” author Kay Arthur reminds us to pray according to God’s name, that is, according to his character and attributes. When we turn our eyes upon our Lord, search the Scriptures for how he has revealed himself, and then praise him, our petitions follow naturally.

For example, praise God because he is Jehovah Rapha, the Lord who heals, then pray for all those in need of healing. Praise God because he is almighty, then pray for his supernatural strength to sustain those who bring relief and hope. Praise God because he is Jehovah Jireh, the Lord will provide, then pray for him to supply needs. Praise God for his patience in not wanting anyone to perish (2 Pt 3:9), then pray for the gospel to bring many to repentance. Praise God, for whom nothing is impossible, then pray for miracles.

When we pray in this way, our prayers are not guided by our own limited perspective, but by the Holy Spirit. When our prayers are based in his Word, they are ordered according to his will. When our prayers are focused on God, we grow in knowledge of him and in faith that the One to whom we pray is able to do immeasurably more than we could ask or imagine (Eph 3:20). Whether we are interceding for Japan or for the needs in our own lives, turning our eyes to our Father in heaven is the first and best place to start.

Retreat Update

If you've paid for April's retreat and would like a refund etc. Please email De'Etta . I've been assured we will work this out - though the process will have to be determined. Typically the CTOF is not allowed to give refunds.

Decisions about the retreat will be made in the next couple of weeks. We are assessing the situation. We need to let the dust settle, see who is still here, and consider the NEEDS of our women - rather than marching bravely along with our plan. I will announce final plans at PWOC studies, on FB and the blog when they have been reached.

Sweet Night - Recap

Last weekend Carol Summar Simpson was a guest on Misawa. Carol is known to have a big heart for women and an engaging way of presenting her message. Carol tours military bases as a Christian Comedian.

Misawa's PWOC board invited Carol to be our guest speaker in February. We chose to have dessert and drinks and make it a "Sweet Night for Wives of the Deployed". During the planning 7 of our10 board members were deployed spouses themselves. Twyla's heart of mercy and vision for deployed spouses made this event SHINE.

We envisioned a night of pampering for our spouses and HUMOR. What a blessing! It's good for the weary to laugh. We had 79 people in the building. Everyone was treated to a variety of decadent and elegant homemade desserts. Each woman had a pretty setting, flowers and a chocolate rose.

Carol shared the adventure of her trip from CA to Misawa. She had us laughing as we remembered our first impressions of Japan. She had some of us crying with her lessons learned from deployments..."I DO snore", "No matter how deep I burrow into the covers no one else will let the dog out", and more. She encouraged us to maintain faith on behalf of others through the story of the four friends who brought their friend to Jesus, doing whatever it took to get him to Jesus.

The deployed wives were gifted with a handmade pillowcase - Twyla rocks! These were made from Japanese fabric.

An event like this is a huge undertaking. Some baked desserts, planned for children, decorated, cut up desserts, set up tables and chairs, took down tables and chairs, advertised, served as tour guides and the list goes on. On behalf of Misawa PWOC Board, thank you to all who contributed to make this event a blessing to so many.

Our prayer is that each deployed spouse left feeling pampered, loved, supported and encouraged.

Leadership Selection 2011/2012

Hello ladies, have you been hearing God's still small voice urging
you towards taking up leadership in PWOC for next year? Now is the
time to put in your application to be a part of the executive board of
PWOC for 2011/2012. Applications are available at the chapel (in the
rack just outside the sanctuary) or you can download a form here.

Turn in your applications to any member of the leadership selection

team (Mary, Renee, Christina, Erika) or to our Titus 2

advisor, De'Etta. All application material is kept

confidential. The deadline for applying is Feb. 20.

PWOC is such an incredible ministry that touches the lives of so many
women here at Misawa, but to keep the ministry going we need women to
step forward into positions of leadership. Is God calling you? Maybe
you feel inadequate for a position of leadership. Look in your Bible
at the stories of Moses, Gideon, Mary and many more. They didn't feel
prepared, but God gave them all they need to fulfill his calling. So
I ask again, is God calling you? If the answer is yes, I encourage
you to step forward in faith to see what God will work through you.

Asia…. A Region in Need of Prayer

God has sent many of us to Asia to be watchmen. We dare not be asleep on the wall.

In 2009 God spoke “Watchman” to me as a focus word. "I have posted watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem (Asia); they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the Lord, give yourselves no rest, and give him no rest till he establishes Jerusalem (Asia) and makes her the praise of the earth." -- Isaiah 62:6-7 (emphasis totally mine)

Prayer, communication with our Father, is key to who we are and what we seek to accomplish at His call. Prayer allows us to partner with God’s kingdom purposes. It’s time to be intentionally radical in our prayers. I am NOT suggesting we neglect our focus of leading women to Jesus on our own installation, I suggest we broaden our vision to encompass our role in our host nation.

Japan needs Jesus. Pray for the breaking of spiritual bondage. I have heard a strong call to pray for the spirit of unforgiveness of past generations to be broken so that revival can rush in.

1% or less of Japan is Christian

1 Protestant church for every 16,288 people

1 missionary for every 53,285 people

Korea – Pray for the breaking of spiritual and political bondage in Korea. We need to pray for continued revival in South Korea and revival in North Korea.

In our region pray for safety for families, new PWOC’s currently being birthed, and continued implementation of a regional vision.

Asia Region (and others led by God), will you commit to help your board cover Asia in daily, intentional, radical prayer and fasting? Where's Home?

This simple question raises a dilemma for many third culture kids and military spouses, me included. “Where IS home?”

How do I answer?

If the person seems like one with whom I’d like to strike up a conversation, or one that is honestly interested, I often say, “Africa or The Philippines”. If the person seems to be simply fulfilling social obligations, I’ll say, “Oregon,” and let it drop. If they seem interested after that, I’ll say, “My parents were missionaries, and we spent furloughs in OR.” If they are STILL interested, we go on to discuss Africa, Philippines, boarding school, Montana, Texas, Alaska, Japan…. Since home is where the heart is, many in my family respond to the question with one word, “Alaska”.

The reality for many of us in the midst of an OConus assignment is we will not “be home for Christmas.” We have parents, spouses, and/or children who we may not see during these Holy Days. I’ve been musing.

As Christians we know that, “This world is not our home”. I eagerly anticipate the time when farewells will cease and we’ll endlessly worship Jesus together, face to face. But for this season….separations from dear ones hurt.

“Home is where the heart is”. Hmmm… If this is true, and I begin to think it is, then it is possible for home to be a spot I’ve never seen. It’s possible home is in Spokane, WA…Eugene, OR…Crescent City, CA….Anchorage, AK….San Angelo, TX…Mangagoy; PI….Liberia, W Africa and Kabul, Afghanistan. The ultimate home being heaven….

It seems to me that no matter where I travel…or where pieces of my heart land with loved ones…if home IS where the heart is… regardless of physical location…I am always HOME for the Holy Days.

And so this season, I’ll be contentedly home in OR, home in TX, home in CA, and home in Japan, while dreaming of great reunions to come when we’ll all be truly HOME together – forever.

I count it a joy to be “home” with so many of you in Asia. Please know I’m praying for you as you enter this season of celebrating our Lord’s birth in a country that may not always feel like “home” to you. I pray for a new awareness of all God’s heavenly gift means to us, and for you to bring a touch of “home” to all you interact with this season. Remember, I’m only a Skype away if you would like to talk this season.

White Chocolate Covered Peppermint Cookies

These cookies, with their white chocolate shell and bright red peppermint sprinkles, make for a very festive holiday platter. They are crispy and delicious, reminiscent of Girl Scout Thin Mints. Makes 4 dozen cookies.

Ingredients

1 c. all-purpose flour, plus more for rolling cookies

1/2 c. unsweetened cocoa powder

1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

5 tbsp butter, softened

3/4 c. sugar

1 large egg, plus 1 egg yolk

3/4 tsp mint extract

4 candy canes, crushed

2 (12 oz) bags white chocolate chips

4 tbsp shortening

Directions

1. Sift flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt together. Cream butter and sugar, then gradually beat in egg and yolk. Mix in mint extract. Slowly add flour mixture, and beat until incorporated. Shape dough into 2 disks, wrap each in plastic wrap, and refrigerate until firm (at least 1 hour, up to two days).

2. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Dough can be difficult to work with, but will be easier to roll out if the surface and rolling pin are cold. If you have a mat or large cutting board you want to use, put it and the rolling pin in the freezer for 10 minutes prior to rolling out the cookies. It can also be helpful to roll the dough between two sheets of wax paper. Roll out one disk of dough at a time, on a lightly floured surface to 1/8-inch thickness. If you find that the dough is sticky by the time it's rolled out, chill it for a few minutes in the freezer before cutting out the cookies.

3. Line cookie sheets with wax paper. Cut cookies using a 2-inch cookie cutter and place on cookie sheet, 1/2 inch apart. Bake 11-12 minutes. Transfer cookies and wax paper to wire racks to let cool. Roll and cut dough scraps once.

4. Sift crushed candy to separate larger pieces from dust, keeping both. Melt chocolate and shortening in a heatproof bowl placed over a pot of gently boiling water. Stir chocolate occasionally. Be sure that bowl is not actually touching the water. When chocolate is almost completely melted, remove from heat. (If left on heat, chocolate will burn and develop a paste-like consistency.) Stir until smooth.

5. Using tongs or forks, dunk cookies in chocolate, let excess chocolate drip off, and place on wax paper to cool. Before chocolate sets up, sprinkle some of the cookies with peppermint pieces and the rest with peppermint dust. Refrigerate until set.

December Nursing Home Visits

Join PWOC this month for two nursing home visits. The first visit is Friday the 17th to celebrate birthdays. Then, on Tuesday, the 21st for a special Christmas visit. We are surprising the whole nursing home with hand tied fleece blankets that say, "God Loves Me!" for all the residents and staff. We will sing Carols and bring Christmas cookies. Both visits will begin at the BX parking lot near main gate at 3:30.

Bible Study Info

Ladies~

Many of you have been wondering what's next for the PWOC bible studies... During the interim between our fall studies and winter studies we are going to have three independent whole group sessions. These will be held at the same time as our normally scheduled studies (6:30pm on Mondays and 9am on Tuesdays). The topics are as follows:

November 29th and 30th - "Biblical Hospitality" - Mary

December 6th and 7th - "Lasting Love and the Excellent Wife: Putting God First in Your Marriage" - Susane

December 13th and 14th - "Delightful Intimacy: Living the Divine Romance" - De'Etta

We will break for the weeks of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. That means no PWOC on November 22nd/23rd, December 20th/21st or December 27th/28th. These sessions are independent so if you miss one, you can still jump in at anytime, so please feel free to make as many of them as possible. The speakers will be Wonderful!

The winter sessions will start the week of January 4th.

Intimacy on the Run

The greatest command is to love God wholeheartedly. Intimacy with God is my life’s priority, before serving His bride. The Gospels inform us the second commandment is “like the first,” – “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” This is where acts of service, leadership and volunteering in PWOCI enter into my relationship with Christ. Service and love of others flow from intimacy with Christ. This command is important, it is “like the first,” but it is clearly SECOND.

It is vital that I keep first things first. I am not primarily “Asia Region’s President.” I am foremost a lover of God. The “secret place,” the “garden tryst,” the “tent of meeting,” must be central in my life. I cannot create intimacy on the run. Yes, I can worship while I drive or workout at the gym…but if the totality of my intimacy with God is “on the run,” intimacy will wither. My relationship with Jesus will lack depth.

I once found myself in a season where I consistently treated my garden tryst with Jesus as a visit to the gas station. I filled up when the gauge was on empty. Not because I loved being at the gas station, but so I could get to what I really loved – the adventure of a road trip. I found myself, coming to Him in prayer and worship, to be filled up so I could pursue my first love, the adventure of serving the bride.

Jesus asks, “Am I your first love or is ministry your first love?”

“Am I your lover or your ministry partner?”

“Forgive me. You are the lover of my soul. You are my heart. Forgive me for the times when I try to exist with intimacy on the run. May I always love You more than Your precious bride.”

I am changed. I set the table with the bread and wine of His presence; I slow down, pull away and make a conscious choice to commune with Him. I settle in for private worship, study and simple silence in His presence… Intimacy is love enjoyed….to BE with Jesus, hear His heart and long for Him. The response of the heart of God is lavishly explosive when I set my heart to love Him above all else.

He invites us to a place of intimacy in the midst of our serving. Will you join Him? My prayer is that each of us pursues HIM above all else. He calls us first and foremost to love Him.

Magnificent Collection

Shortly after our arrival in Japan we enjoyed a walk on Momoishi Beach. Beachcombing is a new adventure for our family. I soon possessed quite a collection of beach trash. My 4 year old brought me a beautiful piece of “something.” Its smooth, almost transparent blue-green shine caught my eye. On closer inspection, I realized this treasure was yet another piece of trash. I couldn’t resist; I slipped it into my pocket as I let other pieces of twine, shell, and broken sand dollar fall to the sand.

I later learned Stacia had given me my very first piece of sea glass. Sea glass is trash thrown into the ocean, broken and common. Over time, through the pounding of waves, the trash is transformed. It gains a new shape, is polished, washes back on shore and is searched for, found, and saved by eager collectors. Some pieces are thin, some are a bit rough, some still bear the faint imprint of their original use, some shine and some are cloudy. Transformed trash becomes jewelry, key chains, charms… objects of delight to the Collector, all reflecting the colors of the sea.

Simple sea glass speaks to me. I’ve found Satan is pleased to remind me of my insecurities and failures. God lovingly reminds me where I once saw myself as trash, He sees me as part of a magnificent collection – His church. The world may find little value in me, but the Master Collector seeks me, chooses me, and lovingly delights in me.

Waves of trials and intimacy with Him transform me into something of value and worth, a piece of His magnificent collection. I’ve noted Christian women come in as great a variety as sea glass: some smooth and shiny, some a bit rough and bearing the imprint of the past. As you shine, wherever He has given you influence, may you see the varied collection He delights in and joy in our differences. May you rest in the fact you’ve been lovingly collected by the Collector.

My prayer for Asia Region is we realize anew that while “God doesn’t make trash,” He is certainly in the business of transforming what the world calls useless into objects of beauty, value and delight….His daughters. Will we partner with Him even as that transformation is sometimes messy? Will we love Him wholeheartedly and love others deeply (Mark 12:30-31)? May you rest today in the knowledge that the Master Collector is pleased to have you in His magnificent collection. He finds value, usefulness and delight in you.

Monday, 11 Oct is a holiday. Group consensus is that we did not want to miss a week of study.

Therefore, we will NOT meet on 11 Oct....but will meet in the chapel on 12 Oct - Tuesday Night - from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.

I've been told there is also a Catholic Parish Council Meeting and so look for me either in the Conference Room or the Fellowship Hall (room across from the kitchen, go past the ladies restroom to the end of that hall and turn left).

Fall Rally FAQ

Is the Fall Rally Free? YES, for everyone.

What are the times of the rally? Friday night registration will begin at 6:00....service at 6:30 and be done by 9:00. Saturday breakfast is at 8:00 a.m. . Our day will conclude by 3:00 p.m.

Can I attend if I don’t attend PWOC? ABSOLUTELY

Can I attend if I don’t attend the base chapel? ABSOLUTELY

What is a “fall rally”? - Think of it as a mini-retreat: elements of a retreat – without the expense or the overnight stay. One response on feedback forms last year, is that our women would like more time to get to develop relationships. Similarly, we heard small groups at the spring retreat were a highlight of our year. The Fall Rally is designed to spiritually challenge, provide opportunity for you to form new friendships or renew old ones after the summer travel season, and provide an easy spot for you to sign up for fall Bible studies etc – if you desire. There will be speakers, a panel discussion around our theme, an outreach project, small group sessions and plain fun.

I know Renee isn't speaking -who is? De'Etta will speak at one of our sessions, Heike Messer (missionary) will speak at another session, De'Etta will guide us through an interactive session.

Is this just a ploy to get PWOC volunteers? No. You are welcome to attend even if you do not attend PWOC or do not plan to attend PWOC. The event is sponsored by PWOC. We will provide opportunity for you to sign up for fall studies, we will display outreach opportunities….but our goal is for this event to be a blessing to all who attend – even if you choose not to participate further in PWOC. Obviously, we’d love to have you join us for our Bible studies if you are not already plugged in to a Bible study that is meeting your needs.

Can I bring my baby? Yes.

Will you be providing children's ministry? No. However, if you need names of youth who are willing to baby-sit, please let us know. Our concern for providing a program for the children was originally space (we weren't in the chapel) and now is the length of the day.

My schedule is up in the air, can I attend if I don't register? Yes. If you think you may attend, it helps us to plan if we include you in our number. Please consider registering with Windy, but by all means, do come if your weekend schedule unexpectedly clears up!

I can't attend the Fall Rally but would like to sign up for Fall Studies, where can I do this? Again, early registration serves to insure we have enough material and assign rooms properly. However, if you haven't been able to sign up at your chapel service and don't attend the Rally, you may sign up at the first study -Monday, 13 Sept @ 6:30 p.m. (Covenant) and Tuesday, 14 September @ 9:20 a.m. Please contact Sarah with any Bible study related questions. More Bible study info can be found here.

How can I help with the Fall Rally? We can find a variety of spots for help...would you like to run the audio or slides? Would you like to help set up Friday afternoon? I thought I'd answer a few quick questions about the Fall Rally.

This is shaping up to be a wonderful event.

Our theme is Shine in the Light of His Glory. Renee will speak to us for two sessions. We'll have a special guest speaker who will speak to us about "Shining Across Cultures". We'll have a panel discussion and be able to ask questions about how best to share Jesus with our Japanese friends. We'll work on a fantastic outreach project to bless a local nursing home at Christmas time.

You'll renew old friends after the summer travel season...and make some new friends too.

It's ALL FREE! Advance registration is only so we can have the right amount of food and supplies on hand.

We'll pass out a flier you can share with your friends this Sunday.

YES, you can attend the Fall Rally even if you don't attend the base chapel. We'd love to host you.

Do you love to dig into the Word? Are you eager to share Holy Spirit revealed truths with others? We need you.

Are you uncomfortable preparing and teaching a study, but comfortable leading a discussion of a video study (i.e. Beth Moore, Priscilla Shirer...)? We need you.

Do you feel a tug or interest to some day teach or facilitate a Bible study, but you aren't sure now is the time? We need you too. If you would like to assist and be mentored by an experienced facilitator, be sure to let Sarah know.

Bible Study Care Groups are foundational to PWOC. We are seeking to have a facilitator/co-facilitator for each of our Fall Studies.

Thanks to our dedicated volunteers we were able to reach 265 children this week with the message of God's tremendous love. Many of the children who came to us (as well as many of you) are new to Misawa this summer. How wonderful it was to be able to welcome them into our community with an exciting week of activities and learning.This open armed welcome would not have been possible without all of you stepping forward to selflessly serve.

VBS has grown from 80 children 2 years ago, 160 children last year to 265 Children this year!

If you really enjoyed your week and would like to consider volunteering for other chapel RE programs please contact either Trish Cronin, the Catholic Religious Education Coordinator (stjudere@gmail.com), or Mary, the Protestant Religious Education Coordinator (misawaprotre@gmail.com). PWOC International Conference is November 11 - 14th in Dallas, TX. Priscilla Shirer will be our keynote speaker. Kari Jobe will be our lead worshipper. Conference is open to anyone who is seriously interested and who feels they could bring something back to share with the rest of the PWOC ladies. Limited space is available. Some funding and scholarships will be provided. If interested, please contact Susane.

God Speaks Through Bread

I've been praying for a rainy day so I could get some bread baked.

I've prayed all week, "God, give us a small break, so I can bake bread before we run out." The break hasn't come.

This morning I took out our last mini-loaf. It was a hot and humid morning. It was hot after chapel at 0900. It was HOT after Sunday brunch. It was HOT all the way home...until we crossed the Log Cabin Pachinko/Circle K intersection about a mile from our home. In the middle of the intersection there were PUDDLES and LOTS of rain....and it poured out by us. POURED....very cool.

I did NOT feel like baking bread when God supplied a break in the weather. I had just enough time to take a much needed nap before heading back to chapel to help transform our sanctuary into a Pirate's ship in the ocean.

I'd been PRAYING for this all week...."Just a quick break, God, so I can bake before I run out of bread." I couldn't forget, I'd ASKED GOD FOR A BREAK in the weather. Not to take a nap or get a breather from the heat, but to BAKE BREAD.

I baked...and I pondered how often I pray for God's intervention, and am napping when He provides the answer.....

Wake me up, God....Give me a constant dose of Holy Spirit inspired No Doze.

Fruity Curry Chicken Salad Recipe

Ingredients

• 4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves - cooked and diced

• 1 stalk celery, diced

• 4 green onions, chopped

• 1 Golden Delicious apple - peeled, cored and diced

• 1/3 cup golden raisins

• 1/3 cup seedless green grapes, halved

• 1/2 cup chopped toasted pecans

• 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper

• 1/2 teaspoon curry powder

• 3/4 cup light mayonnaise

Directions

1. In a large bowl combine the chicken, celery, onion, apple, raisins, grapes, pecans, pepper, curry powder and mayonnaise. Mix all together. Serve!

• Make this with some plain or lemon yogurt instead of using Mayonnaise. Or split it (half Mayo/ half yogurt). I add flax seed to everything. Serve on Pita break instead of a thicker bread to make it lower calorie or eat on top of a green salad.

Twyla's Retreat Cake Balls

Ingredients

1 (18.25 ounce) package chocolate cake mix
1 (16 ounce) container prepared chocolate frosting
1 (3 ounce) bar chocolate flavored confectioners coating (Chocolate, may take more)

Directions

1.Prepare the cake mix according to package directions using any of the recommended pan sizes. When cake is done, crumble while warm into a large bowl, and stir in the frosting until well blended.

2.Melt chocolate coating in a glass bowl in the microwave, or in a metal bowl over a pan of simmering water, stirring occasionally until smooth.

3.Use a melon baller or small scoop to form balls of the chocolate cake mixture. Dip the balls in chocolate using a toothpick or fork to hold them. Place on waxed paper to set.

Keynote Speaker: Priscilla Shirer

Priscilla Shirer is a BIBLE teacher. Through the expository teaching of the Word of God to women, her desire is to see women not only know the uncompromising truths of Scripture intellectually but experience them practically by the power of the Holy Spirit. Priscilla is a graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary with a Master's degree in Biblical Studies. She has been a conference speaker for major corporations, organizations, and Christian audiences across the United States and the world.

Priscilla is married to her best friend, Jerry, and the couple has three sons: Jackson (7 yrs) Jerry Jr. (5 yrs) and Jude (1). They live in Dallas, Texas.

Jerry and Priscilla have founded Going Beyond Ministries (click for info) through which the message of God’s desire for a passionate love relationship with His children is boldly proclaimed. Going Beyond Revivals for women occur across the country several times a year.

Young girls dream about becoming lawyers, fashion designers, nurses or mothers. Kari Jobe knew at 10 that she would be a worship leader. Raised in a Christian home with a father who was a traveling minister, Kari began singing in church when she was 3.
